Masanori Konishi 小西 正紀, but more commonly known as Yoshiyuki Konishi or Don Konishi, was born in 1950 and raised in the ancient feudal castle town of Tsu in the Japanese prefecture of Mie. He was brought up into a family that already owned a kimono atelier for several generations and some of his earliest memories were of kimonos, which is clearly where the passion for clothing started "My childhood memories are all about kimonos. A trip for me meant accompanying my mother on her buying trip, to Kyoto to select gorgeous obis, or to a trade show to look at hundreds of kimono fabrics". Although his own designs do not reflect his heritage and are anything but traditional Japanese style.
He established ‘Ficce Uomo Company and the Ficce Uomo menswear line in 1981, followed by the launch of the Yoshiyuki Konishi menswear line in 1987 and shortly after Ficce Denim menswear in 1988. The aesthetics vary greatly between Ficce Uomo and Yoshiyuki Konishi, this was a focus of his to keep the brand images separate. The wide variety of knitwear styles that were produced at the time was unseen and his designs were spoken about as being futuristic, Walter Greene wrote in Black Elegance (April 1998): "With a clear vision of the future, this designer moves into the 21st century with style and substance." He quickly gained popularity throughout Asia and the western world, particularly America. Then in 1991, Konishi won the Mainichi Fashion Grand Prix and went on to introduce ‘Ficce Donna’ and ‘Ficce Sport’ ski wear in 1993.
